Web designers like other professionals take a lot of pride in their work.  They are happy when their clients are happy.  Communication is the key to keeping both sides content, and there are several things clients can do to keep things running smoothly. So if you want to get the best results from your web designer, consider these 3 strategies:

Be realistic and upfront with your budget

Web designers can make magic happen, and like any design business, the more money you have, the more bells and whistles you can get.  A lot of clients want a gold plated website and ask for it when in reality they are on a bronze level budget.

If you can be upfront with your designer (and yourself) and tell them what you’d like as well as what you can afford, they can tell you what you can realistically get at that price band.  When you know what to expect, you’ll be happier with the results, and so will your designer.

Give great examples

There is a reason for all those magazines and hairstyle guides when you go to the salon or the barber shop – the more information you can give, the better cut you will likely receive.  So if there are websites you admire, from the graphics to the functionality, don’t be shy about sharing them with your designer.

It will give them a much clearer picture of your vision, and as the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Ban the words “I’d do it myself if I had the time…”

Perhaps you could.  People can also extract their own teeth, but the results are usually less than optimal and require professional help to repair.

Save the DIY speech for the hardware store.  Let your designer know how much you value their professional expertise and watch your good working relationship develop into a great one.
